I did two degrees in psychology and one in communications. For nearly eight years I was employed as an Occupational Psychologist in what is now the UK government's Employment Service. I continue to be registered as a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society.

So how come I work on the Internet and in online media?

I've always been interested in how new technologies affect how people communicate and work with each other.

In the Employment Service I led an in-house consultancy team working on Human Factors of IT Systems. In 1992, I started my private consultancy to explore more work in the creative applications of IT.

My professional specialisms are in the fields known as Human-Computer Interaction and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work. Sorry about the jargon - the gist is organising people and systems so that they can work together better.

I keep up my contacts through my work on the British Human-Computer Interaction Group executive committee (which I chaired from 1995-97) and the Applications Editorial Board of Interacting with Computers. 

At a local level I bought into the idea of Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter (CIQ) because it seemed to offer me a way into working with the kind of people who I wanted to work with. Hence I got involved with the multimedia elements of the National Centre for Popular Music (NCPM) from 1993 onwards, and moved into an office in the Workstation two years later.

• Director, Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre Ltd (responsible for running the Showroom cinema and Workstation media centre)
• Director, Sheffield Live Arts Trust (charity, wound up in Summer 2001)
• Member, Chartered Insitute of Personnel and Development Advisory Board for Certificate in Online Learning
• Member, Advisory Panel for Venturesphere Internet Incubator initative
